No one likes to freely offer up information to an employer, that then gives them the opportunity of saying “you didn’t get the job”.  That’s just job seeker suicide.

But sometimes employer will ask you straight out – “Tell me, what are two biggest weaknesses?”.  Most of the time, we just want to say, “I don’t have any”.  But that would be both lying and also avoiding to freely offer up anything that will be used against us.  If we say "I can’t think of anything right now" – the message it sends to the employer is that, either you’re under-prepared for this interview, or you’re hiding something.  Either way, the employer is now less likely to choose you.

Some things employers are concerned about include - gaps in your CV; changing jobs often; revealing physical or medical restrictions, needing regular time off, and basically anything that might be an objection to you being chosen for the job.

Age discrimination is also an issue in the job market and always has been.  If you’re over 40 and struggling to find work, then it tends to be put down to age discrimination.  Employers will discriminate!  At the end of the day, they have to make a decision about who to hire.  And it’s hardly ever a cut and dry decision.  When it comes down to who to progress with, and who to cut away, they decide on any number of factors.

If you make it easy for an employer to discriminate against you, then they probably will.  But, you don’t have to make it easy for them.  It is vitally important that you understand what employers look for in their ideal candidate, and how to prevent being discriminated against because of your age.
